A bone conduction implant, or BAHA ® system, is a surgically implanted medical device used to treat certain types of hearing loss. The BAHA system conducts sound through vibration of the bone (bone conduction), using a titanium implant to transmit the sound to the inner ear (cochlea), bypassing the external auditory canal, eardrum and middle ear. This implant is only recommended when amplification by air conduction (traditional hearing aids) is contraindicated.
To determine whether a patient is a BAHA candidate, a diagnostic hearing evaluation must be completed. As part of the Cochlear Provider Network, Dr. Rierson is trained to evaluate and program BAHA devices and can even provide a demonstration for candidates considering implantation.
