Part of the device is implanted under the skin behind the ear, and the electrode that is inserted into the cochlea stimulates the auditory nerve directly, bypassing the damaged hair cells. A bone conduction implant, or BAHA ® system, is a surgically implanted medical device used to treat certain types of hearing loss. The BAHA system conducts sound through vibration of the bone (bone conduction), using a titanium implant to transmit the sound to the inner ear (cochlea), bypassing the external auditory canal, eardrum, and middle ear. This implant is only recommended when amplification by air conduction (traditional hearing aids) is contraindicated.
To determine whether a patient is a BAHA candidate, a diagnostic hearing evaluation must be completed.
